A comparison of the best SEO agencies in Germany
Anyone who wants to be visible on Google, in AI overviews and, increasingly, in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or other AI search systems needs more than just individual SEO measures these days. Professional search engine optimisation combines technology, content, off-page signals and, increasingly, GEO and AI search optimisation to form a holistic visibility strategy. It is therefore no longer just a good Google ranking that matters, but also whether a website is technically sound, offers relevant content, builds authority and remains understandable to both traditional and AI-based search systems.
But which providers actually master these disciplines? Our comparison of the best SEO agencies in Germany directly compares 50 providers and examines, amongst other things, their range of SEO services, technical SEO, content, off-page and GEO factors, contract flexibility, Agenturtipp customer reviews, prices, as well as relevant awards, rankings and industry standards.
Key points at a glance
- Not every SEO agency is right for every business: the key factors are the business model, company size, competition, internal resources and the services required – ranging from technical SEO to GEO.
- Our comparison covers 50 SEO agencies: we assess the range of services, contract flexibility, agency reviews, awards, industry standards, as well as cost transparency and value for money.
- The rankings are determined according to fixed criteria: the ranking is based on a weighted methodology with clearly defined factors; there is no editorial self-promotion by DREIKON.
- Monthly cancellation options are a major plus: flexible contracts reduce the risk for clients and demonstrate that agencies must retain their clients through performance, communication and results – not through long-term contractual commitments.
- Reviews are compared consistently via Agenturtipp: it is not just star ratings that are decisive, but also the number of reviews, their reliability and recommendations; reviews from small data sets are therefore ranked with greater caution.
- External quality indicators round out the picture: the iBusiness Top 100 SEO, DIN Consortium, BVDW Code of Conduct, as well as ‘Agentursieger’ and ‘Feedbax’ rankings are also factored into the assessment.
- A broad SEO portfolio is viewed positively: relevant factors include SEO, technical SEO, content, off-page SEO, as well as GEO and AI search, provided these services are actually part of the agency’s offering.
- Price alone is not the deciding factor: what is more important is whether the costs, scope of services and perceived benefits are clearly aligned and communicated transparently.
Transparency Notice
DREIKON manages this site and is itself listed as an SEO provider. The selection and ranking are based on the criteria set out below. Instead of Google reviews, only reviews from genuine customers on the agency directory agenturtipp.de are taken into account. The ranking is determined by the quality and quantity of the reviews, the scope of the SEO portfolio, relevant public SEO awards and memberships, as well as the expansion of online marketing through additional services such as SEA and GEO. The order is determined based on these criteria and is not influenced by editorial discretion.

Methodology of the comparison
Agenturtipp as a standardised basis for evaluation
When evaluating SEO agencies, we use only reviews submitted directly to Agenturtipp. The reason for this is to ensure better comparability: reviews from different platforms vary in terms of their rating scales, verification mechanisms and user bases. External reviews, some of which Agenturtipp also displays, are therefore not included in our assessment.
Quality and quantity of reviews
The ranking takes into account both the score and the number of reviews. An agency with 5.0 stars from two reviews is therefore not automatically rated higher than a provider with 4.9 stars from several dozen reviews. To improve comparability, the rating quality is Bayesian-smoothed and the number of reviews is also taken into account separately.
Scope of the SEO portfolio
In addition to reputation, we assess the breadth of the service range. In particular, we take into account SEO, technical SEO, content, off-page SEO, as well as GEO and AI search. A broader portfolio is rated higher if the services are demonstrably part of the agency’s actual offering.
Contract flexibility
Contract terms are also factored into the ranking. Contracts that can be terminated monthly or are flexibly structured are viewed favourably, as they reduce the financial risk for clients and promote stronger client loyalty based on performance rather than long contract terms.
Certifications and external quality indicators
In addition, we take into account external indicators such as the iBusiness Top 100 SEO Service Providers, membership of the DIN Consortium, the BVDW Code of Conduct for SEO, and rankings on Agentursieger and Feedbax. These criteria are not considered to be of equal weight, but they provide additional indications of market presence, industry engagement and external recognition.
Cost transparency and value for money
We rate agencies positively that communicate prices, budget frameworks or scopes of work transparently. In addition, the value for money as rated on Agenturtipp is factored into the ranking. The decisive factor is not the lowest price, but a clear balance between costs, scope of services and perceived benefit.
Notes on awards and reviews
The Agency Winner is an annual award presented by Agenturtipp to agencies that have received particularly high ratings in various specialist areas, such as SEO or content marketing. The ranking is not based solely on the visible star rating:
- 70 per cent of the score comes from Agenturtipp reviews
- and 30 per cent from Google reviews;
- in addition, a Bayesian average also takes the number of reviews into account.
A place as an ‘Agentursieger’ is therefore a separate ranking and should not be equated with the standard Agenturtipp star rating.
The iBusiness Top 100 SEO service providers are a regularly updated selection of leading German-speaking SEO providers. The most important factor for inclusion is the agency’s Google visibility for SEO-relevant search terms, as measured by XOVI; in addition, iBusiness takes into account, amongst other things, quality seals, appearances at industry events and the number of employees.
Inclusion in the Top 100 therefore does not automatically imply a specific position between 1 and 100 – the quarterly list is not a traditional ranking with a numbered order.
Membership of the DIN SPEC 33461 consortium demonstrates that representatives of the agency have contributed to the development of the standard on methodology for search engine optimisation of websites and have brought their practical experience to bear. It is therefore an indication of professional involvement in the standardisation of SEO processes. However, consortium membership is not a certification of the agency and does not mean that its SEO services have been tested or certified by DIN.
The BVDW Code of Conduct for SEO is a voluntary commitment for SEO agencies. Signatories undertake to adhere to defined quality criteria, transparent working practices and specific rules. In the event of complaints, breaches may be investigated and sanctioned by a complaints committee.
For our rating analysis, we use only reviews submitted directly to Agenturtipp, so that all agencies are compared against one another using the same data set. Reviews from different platforms differ in terms of rating logic, scale, verification procedures and user base, and are therefore only comparable to a limited extent. External reviews, some of which Agenturtipp also displays in agency profiles, are deliberately not included in our rating comparison.
An average rating of 5.0 stars is of limited significance without knowing the number of reviews. An agency with a 5.0 rating based on just two reviews has a much smaller data set than, for example, an agency with a 4.9 rating based on 93 reviews. That is why, in its ‘Agency Winner’ ranking, Agenturtipp takes into account not only the rating itself but also the number of reviews, using a Bayesian average, to ensure that individual top ratings do not disproportionately influence the result.
Why is a one-month notice period a sign of a good SEO agency?
A one-month notice period is a clear advantage for us and a strong indicator of quality. It shows that an agency does not need to tie its clients in with long-term contracts, but instead relies on its performance, communication and results to win them over.
For clients, this means greater control and significantly lower risk. If the collaboration or the progress made is not satisfactory, they can react at short notice. At the same time, it creates constant pressure on the agency to perform: month after month, it must prove that the collaboration offers genuine added value.

Why isn’t DREIKON in first place in its own ranking?
Openness and honesty are our top priorities in this comparison. That is why we do not automatically place DREIKON in first place simply because we are publishing the comparison ourselves. The ranking is based on the established criteria and is intended to remain as transparent as possible. We want to impress through our actual performance – not through a ranking that has been manipulated in our favour.
We therefore do not see DREIKON’s current third-place position as a disadvantage, but rather as an incentive. Particularly in the age of AI, GEO and rapidly changing search systems, standing still is not an option. Our aim is to continuously develop our services, processes and methods.
Which SEO agency is right for which business?
- Small and local businesses: Local SEO agencies or smaller, specialist SEO agencies. Key factors include Google My Business profiles, local landing pages, reviews, local citations and transparent pricing.
- Medium-sized businesses: SEO agencies with a broadstrategic remit. Key factors include technical SEO, content, off-page optimisation, personalised support, flexible contracts and transparent reporting.
- B2B companies: B2B and content-focused SEO agencies. Specialist content, complex customer journeys, lead generation, thought leadership and GEO/AI search are particularly important.
- Online shops: E-commerce SEO agencies . Crucial factors include technical SEO, crawling, indexing, category structures, product data, internal linking and scalability.
- Large companies and enterprises: Larger SEO agencies with specialised teams. Key factors include enterprise technical SEO, international SEO, data analysis, complex stakeholder processes and high implementation capacity.
- Internationally oriented companies: International SEO agencies . Key factors include hreflang, international domain strategies, localisation, and cross-border keyword and competitive analysis.
- Companies with a strong focus on content: SEO and content marketing agencies. Key factors include content strategy, editorial quality, information architecture, E-E-A-T and scalable content processes.
- Companies facing intense competitive pressure: SEO agencies with strong off-page and digital PR expertise. Key factors include backlink profiles, brand mentions, digital PR, competitive analysis and authority building.
- Companies focusing on AI visibility: SEO agencies with GEO/AI search expertise. Key factors include ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI overviews, entity optimisation, citations, structured data and AI visibility monitoring.
- Companies with multiple marketing channels: full-service agencies . It makes sense to integrate SEO, GEO, content, SEA, social media and other channels with a centralised strategy and reporting framework.
- Companies with a strong in-house team: SEO consultancies or specialist consulting agencies. Particularly useful for audits, strategy, brainstorming, training and complex technical issues.
- Start-ups and fast-growing companies: Flexible , performance-oriented SEO agencies. Key factors include short-term contracts, rapid prioritisation, scalable processes and a focus on high-impact measures.
- When the problem is clearly defined: Specialised SEO agencies. These are a good choice when, for example, technical SEO, local SEO, digital PR or international SEO need to be tackled in a targeted manner.
- When multiple disciplines need to work together: Full-service agencies . These are particularly suitable when SEO, GEO, content and paid media need to be managed jointly.
- If AI visibility is a strategic goal: agencies with proven GEO/AI search expertise. The key factors are not only optimised content, but also entity signals, structured data, external brand mentions and measurable AI visibility monitoring.

Now it’s your turn: What does your business need to boost its AI visibility?
You don’t need another general assessment, but rather clarity on which GEO measures actually make sense for your business. That is precisely what we will clarify with you: where do you currently stand in terms of SEO and AI visibility, what internal resources are available, and where would external support be worthwhile? In a no-obligation initial consultation , we’ll work with you to determine whether you need one-off advice, a GEO audit or ongoing support, and whether DREIKON is the right partner for this.
Frequently Asked Questions about Good SEO Agencies (FAQ)
A GEO agency optimizes content for generative search systems (AI response engines) and ensures that brands appear correctly, visibly, and quotable in AI responses.
SEO optimizes for classic search results, GEO for AI-based answers. A modern GEO SEO agency masters both disciplines.
No. GEO complements SEO. Without clean SEO, GEO is not sustainable.
A good GEO agency combines traditional SEO expertise with optimisation for generative search systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI and others. It takes a data-driven approach, ensures its methodology is transparent, and takes into account not only content but also technical factors, entity signals, structured data, external mentions and digital authority. Also important are transparent monitoring, clear success criteria and a service model that suits the company’s specific situation.
An effective GEO agency should cover a GEO audit, content creation and optimisation, entity optimisation, structured data and ensuring a website’s accessibility for AI crawlers. Depending on the strategy, this may also include prompt research, grounding pages, digital PR, citations, brand mentions, link building, competitive analysis and AI monitoring. Combining GEO with SEO, content and technical optimisation is particularly beneficial.
The cost of a GEO agency depends on the scope of services, the size of the business and the starting point. A one-off GEO audit is generally cheaper than ongoing support covering content, technical optimisation, digital PR and AI monitoring.
Key quality indicators for SEO agencies include, in particular, the BVDW SEO Quality Certificate, the BVDW SEO Code of Conduct and DIN SPEC 33461. The BVDW certificate involves a quality audit, whilst the Code of Conduct represents a voluntary commitment to defined rules. DIN SPEC 33461 describes a structured methodology for SEO, but is not a traditional agency certification.
Many German SEO agencies now also offer GEO or AI search optimisation. In our comparison, these include, amongst others, DREIKON, Claneo, eology, HECHT INS GEFECHT, SEO-Küche, Seokratie, Suchhelden, Online Solutions Group, Peak Ace, Bloofusion, Optimerch and Aufgesang.
When making your choice, the mere presence of the term ‘GEO’ on a website should not be the sole deciding factor. What matters are specific services such as entity optimisation, structured data, AI crawler accessibility, citable content, digital PR, and monitoring of visibility and mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI.
Before commissioning an SEO agency, you should, above all, ask about specific measures, experience, responsibilities, costs and how success is measured. The following questions are particularly important:
- What experience do they have with similar companies?
- Which measures will be implemented first?
- What services are included in the price?
- Who will manage the project?
- Which KPIs will be measured?
- How does the reporting process work?
- How is link building carried out?
- Are GEO and AI search also taken into account?
- And what are the contract terms?
Guaranteed rankings, non-transparent methods and unrealistically cheap all-in-one packages are typical red flags with SEO agencies. Other critical issues include mass link buying, low-quality AI-generated content, unclear KPIs, a lack of references and long-term contracts without a clearly defined scope of work. Reputable agencies explain openly what they do, what results are realistic and what risks or dependencies exist.
